12 TWA L-1049 Super Constellations began eastbound cross-country nonstops on October 19 , 1953 .

14 The ultimate type in the Constellation line , the luxurious L-1649A Starliner , called Jetstream by TWA , flew effortlessly across the county starting in May 1957 and was capable of California-to-Europe nonstop segments . It was quickly overwhelmed by pure jets that arrived less than two years later .

From the end of World War Two until the beginning of the jet age , TWA was synonymous with the Lockheed Constellation . Including all variants , from the model 049 through the 1649A ‘ Jetstream Starliner ’, TWA operated more than 150 Constellations over the years .
