AIRPORT REVIEW Porto are closely related languages , and these shared roots create a sense of familiarity and comfort for Galicians traveling through Porto .
Located just seven miles ( 11km ) northwest of Porto ’ s city center , the airport is nestled in the beautiful region of Northern Portugal . Many Galicians prefer Porto despite Galicia having three airports of its own — Santiago de Compostela ( SCQ ), A Coruña ( LCG ), and Vigo ( VGO ). SCQ is the busiest of the three , but , like the others , it focuses largely on domestic flights . It connects to just a few European destinations . Coruña and Vigo airports serve fewer passengers and go to fewer foreign places .
Porto ’ s extensive network of direct connections to major cities around the globe means that there is less need for layovers — a great convenience .
PORTO LOOKS AHEAD
In late July , the airport started a runway renovation that is set continue until February 2026 . ANA Aeroportos de Portugal , partnering with Aciona , is investing € 50 million ( US $ 54.7 million ) in this extensive upgrade , the work being carried out limited between midnight and 06:00 , Monday through Saturday , to minimize disruptions .
The project includes repaving runway 17-35 , reinforcing its structure , adjusting the geometry , and upgrading the light signaling systems with energy-efficient LEDs . The overhaul also involves the modernization of drainage and the installation of civil infrastructure for ILS Category II navigation on runway 35 , enabling improved operations in low-visibility conditions . All in all , it will be the most significant overhaul in the airport ’ s history .
8 The exterior of Porto Airport reflects its modern design , handling over 15 million passengers annually . Located 11km ( 6.8 miles ) from Porto , it provides convenient access to the city and northern Portugal .
