AIRWAYS INDUSTRY Lebanon-Israel Conflict
On September 28 , 2024 , the EASA issued a CZIB advising against operating within the airspace of Lebanon and Israel at all flight levels . This recommendation stems from the ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel , but also from that between Hamas and Israel . The conflict involves rockets , missiles , and drones launched from Lebanon , as well as Israeli airstrikes and artillery fire , leading to misidentification and miscalculation risks . The situation is further complicated by both sides deploying air assets at various altitudes .
The EASA will continue to closely monitor the situation to assess any changes in the risk levels for EU aircraft operators . Air operators are advised to follow all available aeronautical publications and guidance from national authorities . The recommendation was to remain valid until October 31 , 2024 , and was subject to review and adaptation based on future developments .
In times of conflict , international agencies such as the EASA are essential . They are an essential source of knowledge and direction for airlines that operate in or close to these unstable areas , enabling them to be fully informed of the risks and to take the preventative measures needed to protect their aircraft and passengers .
A LOOK AT THE PAST : THE EASA AND LIBYA
The Libyan Civil War , which erupted in 2011 , presented another significant challenge for civil aviation due to widespread violence , the presence of armed groups , and the breakdown of governmental structures . The EASA played a pivotal role in addressing these challenges and ensuring the safety of air travel in the region .
During that conflict , one of the EASA ’ s primary responsibilities was to assess the evolving security situation and give guidance to airlines operating in or near Libya . This involved monitoring the activities of armed groups , tracking the movements of military aircraft , and assessing the risks presented by ground-based threats such as surface-to-air missiles . Based on this information , the EASA issued regular safety advisories , recommending airspace closures , rerouting flights , and implementing specific safety protocols .
In addition , the EASA worked closely with the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority ( LCAA ) to support the restoration of air navigation services . It provided technical assistance , trained personnel , and facilitated the repair and maintenance of aviation infrastructure . The EASA also played a crucial role
