Summer sees a surge in flights to Mediterranean destinations , while winter attracts Nordic visitors seeking the snowy landscapes that can easily be reached from Riga .
RIX handles over 42 % of the region ’ s air traffic and 40 % of its flights . In addition , the airport is a growing cargo hub , processing over 27,200 tonnes annually . The tonnage is set to expand with the opening of the Baltic Cargo Hub , which is under construction and scheduled to become operational in 2026 .

9 10 Riga International Airport ’ s new terminal project is set to increase passenger capacity and enhance services . Featuring a modern design and upgraded facilities , the terminal will provide expanded space to accommodate rising air traffic and meet the airport ’ s future growth needs .
Financially , this terminal performed strongly in 2023 , reporting € 72.5 million ( US $ 78.4 million ) in revenue from 61,300 flights , bolstered by passenger growth , ancillary services like parking , and cargo operations . Rising operational costs , particularly energy-related expenses , present challenges , but the airport is addressing them through € 22 million ( US $ 23 million ) in investments in energy-efficient systems .
NEW TERMINAL PROJECT
RIX is working to establish itself as Northern Europe ’ s premier air-rail hub . Its new terminal will be integrated with a new train station , enabling passengers to take Rail Baltica , an under-construction highspeed rail network connecting the Baltic capitals and extending to Poland and Germany . Once completed , travelers will be able to reach Riga ’ s central station
in just eight minutes and make connections to Tallinn and Vilnius in under two hours .
The new terminal has been designed to harmonize with Riga ’ s urban landscape , with natural light flooding the space . The builders are pursuing a BREEAM certification , using materials like wood , metal , and natural stone with a transparent façade . The terminal will feature expanded check-in
