We are dedicating this issue to the loving memory of two women who , as Morgan said , made a difference through their lives by breaking paradigms and leaving enduring legacies in the aviation industry : Colleen Barrett and Mary Wells Lawrence . Their names became synonymous with the airlines for which they worked , inspiring their employees and transforming them in profound ways .
Colleen Barrett was a trailblazer whose leadership and vision helped shape Southwest Airlines , one of the most successful airlines in the world . Starting her career as a legal secretary , Colleen ’ s tenacity and dedication propelled her to the airline ’ s top ranks , where she served as president from 2001 to 2008 . Under her leadership , the airline became known not only for its operational efficiency and profitability , but also for its unique corporate culture centered around love , respect , and customer service .
Colleen ’ s ‘ people-first ’ philosophy and her commitment to employee satisfaction were revolutionary in the industry , proof that a focus on heart and humanity can drive business success .
With her advertising agency , Wells Rich Greene , Mary Wells Lawrence made history as the first female CEO of a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange . Although her career was rooted in advertising , her innovative spirit and creative genius were instrumental in transforming the image of Braniff International Airways , for which she crafted bold and unforgettable campaigns that captured the imagination of the public . Her work set new standards for creativity and branding in the aviation sector .

Colleen died on May 8 , at age 79 . Mary passed away on May 11 , at 95 . Both of them exemplified the power of visionary leadership and the importance of fostering a culture of innovation and care . They broke barriers in industries dominated by men , demonstrating that determination and creativity can overcome any obstacles . In gratitude for their contributions and with a commitment to carry forward their legacy , we at Airways bid farewell to these extraordinary women , knowing that their spirit will continue to soar across the skies they so profoundly influenced .
