Nuuk airport officially reopened its doors on November 28 , 2024 ; one of the most important dates in the history of Greenland . However , the airport had been operating since the previous June , when the domestic turboprop traffic was relocated to the new terminal . The old terminal building , an unsuitable eyesore , quickly fell victim to the wrecking ball and no longer exists .
As part of the reopening ceremonies , an Air Greenland ’ s flagship , the Airbus A330-800 , had the honor to land in Nuuk . This was the first time that a wide-body aircraft had landed there , and marked the start of international operations in
Nuuk . The airliner , delivered fresh from Airbus in 2022 , also marked a new era for Air Greenland , which had hitherto operated a Boeing 757-200 and an Airbus A330-200 .
At first glance , the scenario of the first landing , on November 28 , 2024 seemed little different from the usual services from Denmark to Greenland . As a regular scheduled flight — GL781 — special fares were even advertised to those who had decided at short notice . After all , the 305 two-class seats in the Airbus A330-800 had to be filled during the seasonally weak demand period . In contrast to summer , when almost all of the daily flights are fully booked , Air Greenland only operates five
