That morning , Airways was aboard the easyJet flight from Malpensa . Once at cruise level , Captain Alessandro Matteoli , speaking on the PA system , made all onboard aware of the race when he said , “ We are speeding up at 975km / h [ 605mph ] to have a chance to be the first to land in Salerno ,” and shared the identity of our competitor , the Volotea A319 from Nantes .
By the time we had reached Florence , however , it was clear that we were going to be beaten and , despite a very speedy 1 hour , five minute flight , and an 8:05 landing at QSR , we landed five minutes after the A319 , which was already parked in front of the terminal when we put our wheels on Runway 05 .
It was a festive arrival anyway . EasyJet crew and representatives , including the airline ’ s Italian Country Manager Lorenzo Lagorio , celebrated the event with a ribbon-cutting . The governor of Campania , Vincenzo De Luca , shook hands with the crew .
