When Solomon broached the subject in the late 1930s , the railroad men predictably paired the idea with a railroad , this time the Canadian National . Solomon was put in touch with Samuel J . Hungerford , president of the Canadian National Railway and a very influential force in the Canadian transport industry . Landplanes would require fuel stops in Canada , and Solomon also sought Hungerford ’ s intervention with British authorities in securing landing rights for Boston-Maine in the UK . Hungerford dismissed Solomon ’ s proposition , asserting that the Atlantic could only be spanned by flying boats . Furthermore , when the British were ready to extend landing rights to a US carrier , Hungerford ’ s support would be with Pan American .

WARTIME
With the outbreak of World War II , the certificated airlines of the United States were called to active duty . In addition to having their employees and their aircraft conscripted into the war effort , the airlines did their part by training Pilots , maintaining military aircraft , and operating transport services for men and materiel .
But Northeast ’ s contribution went above and beyond the normal call of duty thanks in large
