The 727s were not a good fit for Pacific ’ s route system . They were extremely expensive to operate and required a threeman cockpit . 737s would have been more appropriate but the airline did not live long enough to see any 737s operate over its route system . Losses were so great that management actually considered removing the 727s from service . However , it was decided that such a move would do more harm than good to the public ’ s perception of Pacific and , besides , the merger issue was now frontand-center once again .
On July 21 , 1967 , G . Robert Henry , former executive vice president of Bonanza Air Lines , took over as president of Pacific Air Lines in preparation for a three-way merger between Bonanza , Pacific , and West Coast . Pacific would be the surviving carrier and the
