UP , UP AND AWAY : A LOOK INTO TWA ’ S FLEET
MARTIN 2-0-2
After World War II , several manufacturers began work on a short-haul DC-3 replacement . The early leader in the race was Martin , whose 2-0-2s flew several months before any competitor . TWA operated the first service with this type in September 1950 and flew it until the early 1960s .

MARTIN 4-0-4
The Martin 4-0-4 was a 2-0-2 with changes to the wings , a pressurized cabin , and a fuselage lengthened to accommodate 40 passengers . The first of TWA ’ s 40 Martin 4-0-4 ‘ Skyliners ’ entered service on November 10 , 1951 .

DOUGLAS DC-4
The Douglas DC-4 first flew in the war month of February 1942 ; all production went to the US military . The type was known as the C-54 with the US Army Air Forces . After World War II , it proved popular and reliable with airlines . TWA used its DC-4s primarily on overseas services until they were eventually replaced with Lockheed Constellations .
