DOUGLAS DC-3
Introduced in 1936 , with the first models designated DST ( Douglas Sleeper Transport ), the DC-3 was a larger and vastly superior airliner that completely transformed commercial aviation within a few years . TWA did not operate its first DC-3 ( DST ) service until June 1937 , but over the years a total of 104 DC-3s ( including DSTs and converted military variants ) served with the company .

NORTHROP GAMMA
The Northrop Gamma saw fairly limited civilian service as a mail plane with Trans World Airlines , but had an illustrious career as a flying laboratory and recordbreaking aircraft . Flying a T & WA Northrop Gamma modified for extremely high altitude research , Captain D . W . ‘ Tommy ’ Tomlinson discovered the jet stream .
