AIR NOSTRUM Líneas Aéreas del Mediterráneo ( YW ) is a regional airline based in Valencia , Spain . Founded in May 1994 to connect small cities in Spain , it operated its first flight on December 15 that year ; a short hop carrying 16 passengers between Valencia and Bilbao under flight number YW251 . The plane was a sixyear-old Fokker 50 , tail number EC-771 , serial number 20133 ,
registered just a few days before the maiden flight .
Air Nostrum has grown a lot since then . It now operates more than 60,000 flights yearly , carrying more than 5.5 million passengers .
Five years after its establishment as an Iberia subsidiary to operate regional flights , Air Nostrum signed an
agreement to join the Iberia Group and changed its name to Iberia Regional Air Nostrum .
Despite its remarkable growth , Air Nostrum kept its focus on the regional Spanish market . It gradually widened its horizons , adding routes to neighboring European countries , like France and Italy , and even North Africa . To accomplish this , the airline had to add new planes , including the British Aerospace 146-200 in 1997 and , between 2001 and 2012 , 19 Dash DHC-8-300s , one of the most important planes in the airline ’ s history .

The Air Nostrum that we now see at airports was born in 2010 , when management modernized the fleet . The airline acquired its first CRJ-1000 ( EC-JLR / MSN : 19002 ) in December of that year . This aircraft , the first of the type to be delivered to any airline , flew with Air Nostrum for 13 years until its retirement in December 2023 .

That modernization plan included the purchasing of 10 CRJ-1000s and five ATR 72s , and the opening of the Madrid- Barajas base , which entered service between 2010 and 2013 .
Air Nostrum still operates both aircraft types , with its current fleet consisting of four CRJ-200s , 25 CRJ-1000s , and six ATR 72-600s . This versatile fleet provides Air Nostrum with the range it needs to cover the whole of Europe , North Africa , and the Canary Islands , one of YW ’ s farthest destinations , albeit still being part of Spain .
