Completely surrounded by the suburbs of Naples and with a single runway , the airport cannot expand and has reached its capacity in terms of flight movements ( hence the decision by a number of low-cost carriers to expand their operations at Salerno Costa D ’ Amalfi ).
NAP hosts some 40 airlines connecting it to destinations in Europe , Africa , North America , and the Middle East . US airlines , in particular , have considerably expanded their presence this year . The 2,641m ( 8,622ft ) Runway 06 / 24 is capable of handling all types of aircraft , up to the Boeing 777 .
The first airline to connect the homeland of pizza to North America was Italian carrier Eurofly ( GJ ) using the Airbus A330-200 in June 2005 . GJ maintained the flight to New York JFK as a summer service even after Eurofly merged with Meridiana ( IG ) in 2010 . But the flight ceased in 2017 ahead of Meridiana ’ s rebranding as Air Italy .
Two years later , in 2019 , United Airlines ( UA ) launched seasonal flights to Newark onboard Boeing 767-300ERs . The past summer was when connections to the US literally took off as , in May , Delta Air Lines ( DL ) started serving New York ’ s JFK , followed one month later by American Airlines ( AA ) flying to Philadelphia ( PHL ) using the Boeing 787-8 .
