AIRLINE REVIEW Icelandair
followed shortly after . While a menu was not provided on board , I am confident the choice of food and quality satisfied everyone . Upon checking in online , I had been given a wide list of options from which to select special meals . I had decided on the ‘ default ’ option , which included a smoked salmon appetizer and a main course consisting of duck and fried chicken waffles . A selection of bread with whisked butter was available . The dessert was a white chocolate mousse . After that came coffee and tea . Overall , the meal was excellent : this lunch will figure in my top three meals in the skies for a long , long time .
After lunch , I explored the IFE a bit more . A live map and a selection of about 70 international titles were available . Considering
Icelandair ’ s network , the choice was adequate . Two details caught my attention : first , the speed and reliability of the gate-to-gate Wi-Fi , which is complimentary for passengers traveling in Saga Premium , and the huge selection of local Icelandic music available .
We soon approached Keflavik , Icelandair ’ s hub , located just 30 miles south of Reykjavík . On this occasion , I did not have a clear window view ; however , I was still able to admire some of the Icelandic landscapes during our approach .
A sea of Boeing 737s and 757s wearing Icelandair ’ s liveries welcomed us . The 757 presence in Iceland was reinforced by Delta and United ; both carriers fly their largest narrowbody aircraft to Keflavik daily
from cities such as New York , Minneapolis , and Chicago . We taxied to a remote stand , where we deboarded from a jet bridge connected to a bus . As I entered the airport , I was able to witness one of the many rush hours in Keflavik ’ s small terminal .
Over the past few years , the airport has been undergoing renovations and is set to expand even more in order to welcome the growing flow of tourists and travelers from the two sides of the ocean .
To continue on to Seattle on board the Boeing 757 , I could have chosen an earlier flight and trimmed my layover to just over one hour . Instead , I decided to take a later one , FI683 , and enjoy some time in the Saga Lounge in Keflavik . The area can comfortably welcome hundreds
6 The central overhead bins are smaller than the side ones , and could potentially be removed due to the lack of use . The seat features plenty of legroom , a footrest , and an adjustable headrest but limited storage space .
7 The food service started soon after reaching cruise level , and I opted for one of the many gins available on the day ’ s flight . This was served with warm breadsticks for a simple yet tasty aperitif .
8 On this flight , a light lunch was served . The appetizer included smoked salmon and shrimp , and the main course consisted of duck and fried chicken waffles . A white chocolate mousse completed the lunch . While no menu was available , this was one of the best – if not the best – meals I have ever had on a flight . The product quality was simply superb .
