Group and its global strategy . At the beginning of 2023 , the carrier announced three new destinations for the year , two of which in the USA . Washington ( on June 2 ) and San Francisco ( on July 1 ) joined Boston , New York ( JFK ), Miami , and Los Angeles , bringing to six the number of US cities connected non-stop to Rome Fiumicino . Service to the US capital city started with five weekly frequencies and went daily from August 1 , while the Northern California gateway began with three weekly rotations , increasing to five from August 2 . A third new destination will be inaugurated on October 29 , when Rio De Janeiro will join the network with daily flights .

During the coming winter season , big news is also expected from ITA in regard to its long-haul network , as the carrier will effectively become part of the Lufthansa
Since the beginning of the negotiation with Lufthansa , at the end of January , the network has been frozen , with no new routes coming after Rio . However , this will change as soon as the agreement with LH will become fully operational . Longhaul operations will be at the heart of the new Italian carrier , as Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr underlined on May 25 : “ We are not entering into ITA Airways to
