Spohr added that “ with its position in the south of Europe , Fiumicino is the perfect fit for us to develop hub operations to Latin America and Africa ”.
Yet , executives in Rome are betting on the North American market also further expanding . “ Since our launch in 2021 , North America has been the focus of our investments and growth ,” ITA Airways ’ Vice President International Sales , Pierfrancesco Carino , told Airways . “ Even before travel restrictions to the USA were lifted , we started thrice weekly service to New York . And , since then , the destination performed so well that , this summer , for the first time , we introduced a third daily service between Rome and JFK . I think that going from three weekly to three daily services in less than two years is an amazing result .”
During its first year of operations , the airline added Boston , Miami , and Los Angeles , but not Toronto , which had been a longstanding destination for Alitalia and where a large American-Italian community is based . “ We are happy with what we have done so far ,” Carino said . “ Load factors are satisfactory and the Italian style has a great appeal among American passengers in regard to cabin decor , service , food , and drinks . Toronto is on our radar , but not for 2023 .”
Carino said that the choice of Washington and San Francisco “ has nothing to do with the fact that both cities are hubs for United , which could be a Miles & More partner for us in the future . Both cities were selected for their appeal to leisure , business , and institutional traffic before the talks with Lufthansa even started . “ Today , of course , we are even happier about our choice ,” he added , “ because our passengers arriving in Washington and San Francisco will have plenty of opportunities to continue their journey through seamless connections
