merger between BEA and BOAC , the airline was aiming to create a new brand that would make reference to the history of Britain ’ s two former airlines , as well as transition into the single-airline operation inside the country .
Ten years after the inauguration of the Negus & Negus livery in 1974 , which combined the symbolism of the former companies into a single design , British Airways was already looking for a new one . It commissioned Landor & Fitch to develop the scheme that still stands today as a highly recognizable livery in the aviation industry decades after its introduction .
“ We were very respectful of the previous insignia that Negus had created . We made subtle changes , like the inclusion of the British Airways crest and a slight gray instead of the white , that helped the livery to feel warmer and more sophisticated .”
The introduction of the 1984 BA livery was very well received by the customers and the British population . Because of that , to this day , it has kept the name of the firm tasked with the making of the design : Landor .
This was also one of the three Boeing 747 heritage liveries that were applied to the fleet just before the retirement of the Queen of the Skies in 2020 .
