Salerno Airport — which is historically known as Salerno Pontecagnano from the name of the municipality in which it is situated , some 15km ( 10 miles ) south of the city — was established in 1926 by the Aeronautica Militare , Italy ’ s Air Force . Until 2007 , the airport was used exclusively by the Carabinieri , firefighters , flight and parachuting schools , and small private aircraft .
