The new team , backed by local politicians , including former Salerno mayor and now Campania Governor Vincenzo De Luca , hoped to create an integrated airport system for the region . They saw Salerno taking over some of the heavilycongested Capodichino traffic ,
particularly during the summer high season .
The COVID-19 pandemic threw a two-year delay into the work the airport needed . That included the resurfacing of the apron and taxiways , a new lighting system , and , more importantly , the extension of Runway 05 / 23 to 1962m ( 6437ft ) to accommodate every aircraft
up to the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 family without restrictions and in all weather conditions .
However , the terminal that welcomed passengers from Nantes and Milan on the July 11 reopening was the same of 2007 and can be honestly defined as no more than basic . Covering 2,000m 2 ( 21,500sq ft ), it is on one floor — a small arrival area featuring two very small baggage belts , and a larger departure area .
There is a cafeteria selling tasty paninis and exquisite desserts including world-famous cannoli , a pharmacy , and a local renta-car company — but no power plugs to recharge a phone and no Wi-Fi . Four desks are available for checking in luggage . Two security lines are in operation , along with one passport boot and two gates .
