seats booked before the actual start of operations , at the peak of the schedule in early September a mere 29 weekly flights operated into Salerno from 13 cities across Italy and Europe . And out of these , only Milan Malpensa , flown by Easyjet , Bergamo , and Turin flown by Ryanair , plus Catania and Verona flown by Volotea , survived the change of season from Summer to Winter on October 27 , with Milan , Turin , Catania , and Verona connected to Salerno on a twice per week basis and Bergamo three times per week , for a total of 11 weekly flights .
Volotea , the European lowcost traditionally connecting regional airports throughout the continent , was the first operator to believe in Salerno ’ s potential when it announced its flights to Campania ’ s second airport at the beginning of last February .
On July 11 , the airline ’ s International Market Director ,
Valeria Rebasti , was onboard the A319 which officially reopened the airport . “ As the first carrier to open reservations to Salerno , today we are proud to be part of such a crucial day for this region ,” she said . “ The two connections to Nantes and Cagliari , and the ones scheduled from September , shorten the distance between the southern part of Campania , Europe and other areas of Italy , shortening and easing the journeys of those tourists interested in reaching the Costiera Amalfitana . And also offering more travel opportunities to the many ‘ expats ’ living in Northern Italy .”
Easyjet ’ s Country Manager , Lorenzo Lagorio , described the addition of Salerno to the airline ’ s 22-destinations Italian network as “ the way to boost our leadership in the Campanian market , where , in 2023 , we offered 3.8 million seats from Napoli Capodichino , which is one
of our three bases in Italy along with Milan Malpensa and Venice .
“ Salerno extends our catchment area not only to southern Campania , but also to northern Calabria and , in the years to come , will be crucial for our growth in this part of Italy , particularly during the summer season , as Capodichino is already operating at its maximum capacity and has very limited expansion opportunities .”
Lagorio confirmed that , for the 2024- ’ 25 Winter season , “ only Malpensa is set to ‘ survive ’ the summer schedule , with two weekly flights ,” but added that “ the numbers put together from July to September will be crucial to define the 2025 flight plan and to identify eventual year-round destinations to add to Malpensa .”
